Practical actions for NT households

The following is a list of simple and practical ways Territorians can do their part to tackle climate change.

  • Wash clothes in cold water, you will generate less than a third of a kilogram of greenhouse gases per wash and save energy and it can reduce energy consumption by 50%.
  • Avoid washing more loads than necessary – washing a full load or just a few socks generates almost the same amount of greenhouse gas.
  • Swap to a water efficient shower head and use a shower timer.
  • Make the switch to solar hot water. For more information on incentives to help you make the switch to solar hot water, click here.
  • Install a rainwater tank.
  • Consider hand washing your dishes, or using the eco-friendly setting on your dishwasher, and only turn it on when you have a full load.  Dishwashers generate up to 500kg of greenhouse gas a year.
  • When cooking, put lids on pots and simmer gently instead of boiling.
  • Look at the energy efficiency star-rating label on electrical appliances.  The more stars the appliance has, the more efficient it is.  The star-ratings of appliances on sale in Australia are available at  www.energyrating.gov.au.
  • Retire the second fridge or freezer.
  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.
  • Choose energy saving globes – they use less power and last up to eight times longer.
  • Use fans and open windows to stay cool.
  • Choose a fuel efficient car. For tips on fuel efficient driving, click here.
  • Walk or cycle, catch the bus or carpool with friends. To view maps of the cycling networks across the NT, click here.  For public bus information, click here.
