Chief Minister's message
Every day we see in the paper or hear on the news something about
climate change. Our children come home from school with new information
about how we can save energy, recycle and how to live with minimal
impact on the Territory, Australia and the planet as a whole.
I know from talking to many Territorians that there is significant interest in the many issues surrounding climate change and particularly what we, as individuals, can do.
Many Territorians are already taking simple, effective steps such as installing a solar hot water system in their home, turning their air-conditioning temperature up (or off altogether), composting waste and turning off lights.
Businesses are also taking a lead by looking at how they can save energy. Reducing the amount of electricity used also helps a business’s bottom line, so it’s a win/win for everyone. Some businesses are taking even greater steps, such as limiting plastic bags, or not carrying them at all. Every bit of action really does count.
This website houses useful information on climate change and provides practical tips for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Northern Territory’s Climate Change Strategy
My government is committed to playing its part to address climate change, and is encouraging all Territorians to do the same.
I will be releasing a draft of the Northern Territory’s Climate Change Strategy in the coming months. Government will be showing a real lead in this strategy, especially around renewable energy, which includes solar.
The strategy is being released as a draft to seek Territorians’ views on proposed measures. We received detailed feedback from 66 individuals and organisations on the June 2008 Discussion Paper on NT Climate Change Issues and this has been incorporated into the draft strategy.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on the draft Climate Change Strategy.
Paul Henderson
Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
Minister for Climate Change
