Territory Day

On the first of July each year Territorians celebrate Territory Day, marking the commencement of Self Government in the Territory on 1 July 1978. The day is celebrated across the Northern Territory in a number of ways, including the famous Territory Day fireworks (both public and private).

2009 Territory Day events

Wednesday 1 July
Darwin - Magical Skies Over Mindil
Mindil Beach Darwin, firework display at 7.30pm.
Mindil Beach Markets are open for food, refreshments, quality craft and family entertainment from 5pm to 9pm.

Alice Springs
Anzac Oval, firework display at 7 pm
BYO Picnic, Chairs and blankets
All welcome

Palmerston
Marlow Lagoon, firework display at 7.30pm.
Sausage sizzle and refreshments available from 6pm.
No private fireworks allowed.

Berry Springs
Recreation Reserve, firework display approx  8 pm.
Food and refreshments (licensed bar) provided by local community groups from 6pm.
Entry is $2 for adults, school aged children are free.

Pine Creek - Sunset at the oval

Town Oval, firework display at 7.30pm.
Gold coin donation BBQ sausage sizzle from 6.00pm.
Bring your own drinks, chairs & blankets.
No private fireworks allowed.

Dundee Beach

Firework display commences at dark.
Sausage sizzle by Dundee Beach Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade - drinks available.
Commencing 6pm. All welcome.

Coomalie
Batchelor oval, fireworks display commencing at dark.
Food and drinks available from 6.30pm.
Bring your own eskies, chairs and blankets.
No glass allowed.

Cox Peninsula
Forsyth Road Sports Complex, Wagait Beach.  Fireworks display at 7.00pm
BYO drinks and chairs. Sausage sizzle commences at 5.30pm.
No private fireworks allowed.

Jabiru
Firework display at 7.30 pm,
Lake Jabiru Park, Civic Drive, Jabiru.
Free community barbeque commencing at 6:30pm
Bring your own chairs, blankets, drinks (no alcohol), mozzie repellent.

Katherine
Showgrounds, firework display at 7.30pm.
Entertainment, drinks and refreshments available from 6.30pm.
Free entry through ticket office. BYO chairs.
No alcohol or private fireworks please.

Tennant Creek
Flag raising and BBQ at Peko Park (cnr Patterson St and Peko rd) from 12pm
Firework display from 7.30pm at showgrounds, all welcome.  Firefighters will remain at showgrounds until 9pm for a family friendly area to set off personal fireworks.

Mataranka
Fireworks display at 7.30 pm
Sunset at the Sport and Recreation Grounds-town Oval,
Catering by Mataranka Better Half Club from 6 pm BYO drinks, chairs and blankets. 

Nguiu
Fireworks at 7.30 pm at Stanley Tipiloura Oval

Yulara
Firework display at 7.15 pm, Yulara Community Oval
Food and licensed bar available, operated by Yulara/Ayers Rock Lions Club
