Emergency recovery coordination

NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services is responsible for managing the prevention, preparedness and response phases of emergency management. The overarching document for managing emergencies is the NT All Hazards Emergency Arrangements.

Recovery

The Department of the Chief Minister is responsible for coordinating the recovery phase of an emergency. This includes coordinating resources to help communities to return to normal after an emergency.

The recovery phase of an emergency starts after the initial response has stabilised the situation. It is a long-term endeavour that includes the whole community in activities such as providing personal services (finance, counselling, emergency accommodation), economic enhancement, restoration and reconstruction, and public health.

The NT Emergency Recovery Plan outlines NT recovery coordination arrangements.

Personal emergency plans

The Northern Territory faces a diverse range of potential emergency events, including a list of natural disasters as outlined by Northern Territory Emergency Services. In relative terms the Territory’s resources are limited and, if a major disaster struck, the response and recovery could take some time.

All Territorians are therefore encouraged to have their own emergency plans that provide a level of self-sufficiency in the first three days after an event. Advice on what to include in these personal plans is available on the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services website.
