The Department of the Chief Minister is responsible for coordinating government policy, planning and activity in relation to issues or incidents that may affect the security of the Northern Territory and its people.
During an incident the Department is the point of liaison and coordination with the Australian Government and other States/Territories. The Department also ensures that the public is kept informed and provides a central point to coordinate public information.
The Department works closely with the NT Police Counter Terrorism and Security Coordination Division and with other NT organisations responsible for responding to the consequences of a terrorist act.Australia’s National Counter-Terrorism Alert System is a system of public messages to inform appropriate levels of precaution and vigilance to minimise the risk of a terrorist incident occurring. The National Counter Terrorism Alert System is a range of four alert levels that communicate the risk of terrorism to Australia: Low; Medium; High; or Extreme.
Recently the way the four levels can be applied has changed. The previous approach required a “one in, all in” approach. If an alert level was changed for one community, geographic location or business/industry sector, it would be changed for all. There will continue to be a National Alert Level (currently at MEDIUM - terrorist attack could occur) that reflects assessments of the national security risk environment. In addition, the new approach enables Australian governments to apply an alert in a more targeted way, specifying the community, geographic location or business/industry sector assessed to be at risk but using the same four tiers (Low; Medium; High; or Extreme).
A change in alert level(s) will be communicated by the Prime Minister (or representative) and by the Chief Minister providing more information specific to the Territory.
