Community Engagement

What is community engagement?

Community engagement refers to the range of ways in which Government works with people in the community, encouraging and rewarding active citizenship. Rather than consulting with people on pre-determined policy directions, community engagement encourages a continuous conversation with citizens about shaping Government policy and improving service delivery.

The Northern Territory Government values the active participation and constructive contribution of Territorians in seeking solutions to the range of concerns that affect them. Community engagement provides the opportunity for individuals, groups and community organisations to work with Government in a constructive way to inform policy directions and to ensure important local knowledge is considered in building better communities with Territorians.

The NT’s Community Engagement Statement

The Chief Minister’s Department has developed a whole-of-government Community Engagement Framework. This identifies the processes, principles and practices required to systematically integrate interaction or ‘engagement’ with the community into the core business of service delivery agencies.

Domestic and Family Violence Advisory Council

The Domestic and Family Violence Advisory Council was established by the Northern Territory Government in 2002. The Advisory Council is charged with providing high level and independent advice to Government on implementation of the Domestic and Family Violence Strategies.
